Synopsis:

This is one of the most refreshing books on organizational improvement to be written in a long time. The reader will follow in the footsteps of the author through multiple organizations during a thirty-year journey.  You will find multiple ways to reposition an organization while enhancing its standing in the community served.  You will learn methods to help employees become your greatest supporters because: "an organization will never rise to a level higher than it collectively presumes itself to be."  This book delves into the heart and soul of organizational dynamics without relying on abstract theories or academic buzzwords. A text of great insight for leaders at all levels.

An editor's confessions:

As a book editor, I'm usually given the authority to "go ahead and make any necessary changes."  And change I do - the comma, the pronoun, the organization, the innuendo.

However, never until Dr. Ricks' Confessions have I edited a book that changed me.

Everyone is a leader at some level.  My particular domain is a middle school classroom.  In this highest of callings, my success depends on (1) having students feel comfortable in my presence, (2) honoring the work of other employees, (3) heralding the realization that each youth is a leader-in-training, and (4) realizing that every day affords the opportunity to leave a legacy.

I was mentored by these principles in nearly every chapter of Charles Ricks' book.  His rich insights and deep sensitivities, woven through anecdotes and wise commentary, moved me greatly.

I celebrate his experienced voice of what it means - at the deepest wellspring - to lead and honor those being led.

Dr. Rocks states: "In his book Confessions - The Soul of Leadership ... one understands instinctively that Dr. Ricks words speak of lived realities. No abstract theories or academic buzzwords. Simple reality lived out in day-to-day leadership.

You will be pleasantly surprised to find yourself agreeing wholeheartedly to so many ideas and principles, and then it will strike you that the goal was not to highlight the author but to illustrate how effective leadership works.

Dr. Ricks' dialogue with the reader offers the possibility of gleaning wisdom from another's experiennce. He is not simply giving us information - he engages us in a shared search for wisdom. ... I think this book is a gem, a classic."

Reviews:

"This book could easily become required reading for grad students and new CEOs ... it's terrific to read your collected wisdom and occasional wit."
Hugh Greeley, President
HG Healthcare Consulting, LLC
Chairperson: Volunteers in Medicine Institute

I thoroughly enjoyed the material, found it very simple for anybody at any stage of life whether CEO, Mid-level management or start-up position. I also liked the little bit of humor."
Ashok K. Verma, M.D., F.A.C.C.

"I have carefully perused the manuscript of this book, and wish I had read it 30 years ago. It would have helped me a great deal in my administrative career, because this dentist/administrator/author has done an excellent job in distilling of practicum into a very readable book of counsel. I highly recommend this book, and believe it will help any leader who wants to be a better leader. You may not want all Dr. Ricks has to say-but I promise-if you'll heed his counsel, you'll be a much stronger leader."
Stephen Gifford, Moderator
American Religious Town Hall Television

"This is a great book about business administration. It is a very different approach and I watched it work perfectly as a board member and medical staff member."
R. Daryl Libby, D.D.S.

"This book has real 'soul,' and, to me, that's the heart of leading."
